• Compound subjects

      A compound subject is a subject that includes two (or more) nouns combined with the word and. The verb should then take the plural form, even if one noun is plural and one noun is singular.

      This paper addresses the archaic notion that gender roles and gender itself are permanent or stagnant over time. (subject = “gender roles [plural] and gender itself [singular]”)
